A traditional Christmas buffet in a 19th-century mill by the Strömsholm Canal. The season begins on November 20. 20 minutes from Västerås.
When the string lights come on along the mill wall and frost still clings to the fences, it’s that time of year again. The herring is laid out, the lutefisk is simmering, and the aroma of Christmas food greets you even on the gravel road leading down to the canal. For many, this isn’t just a dinner. It’s the evening when Christmas truly begins.
The Christmas buffet season begins on November 20

Seven kinds of herring, lutefisk, and ris à la Malta on the Christmas table
The Christmas buffet is classic through and through. Nothing reimagined, nothing that needs explaining. Everything you hope for when you sit down is on the table—and then some. Here’s a sampling of what’s served.

Local producers
The meatballs are made here; the salmon comes from Borgåsund
The ground beef for the meatballs comes from Åsby Kött & Vilt, which also supplies the Skantzö sausage served at the cold buffet. The hot-smoked salmon comes from Borgåsundsfiskarn—the same salmon served here during the summer, both plain and with chili. The same suppliers as last year. That’s why the Christmas buffet tastes just the same as it did the last time you were here—which, for some guests, is the whole point of coming back.
Businesses and Large Groups
Company Christmas dinner at Magasinet, the Pub, or on the Attic
Kvarnen has seven venues on the premises. Magasinet seats 130 guests at long tables, the Pub seats 300, Vinden seats 60, and the Restaurant seats 55. This means there’s room for both a group of 30 and the entire company of 100, and your group won’t have to share space with others. If you’d like to hold your conference during the day and your Christmas dinner in the evening, everything is located in the same building. Send us a request with the date, number of guests, and what you’d like to get out of the day, and we’ll get back to you as soon as possible with suggestions for a venue and seating arrangements.
The Entire Visit
Frost on the canal and a night in the RV
The entire area is decked out as Christmas approaches. String lights along the mill, frost on the fences, and the Christmas market that’s a staple of the season. The canal flows quietly outside the window, and the walk there takes a minute—if you need a breath of fresh air between the herring and the lutefisk. If you have a RV, you can stay overnight. The campsite is open year-round, and it’s just a short walk from your RV to the table—which solves the problem of who has to drive home. If you’re coming from Västerås or Eskilstuna, you can, of course, just as easily head back the same evening.
